Rockdale School Board Honored During School Board Appreciation Week 2019

Rockdale County Board of Education 2019 members, with RCPS logoConyers, Ga. –  Rockdale County Public Schools (RCPS) is joining in a statewide celebration this week to salute the efforts of local school board members. The week of March 18-22, 2019, has been proclaimed School Board Appreciation Week in Georgia. The weeklong observance calls attention to the contributions of local boards of education.

The Rockdale County Board of Education holds the highest distinction of Exemplary Board by the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA). In addition, Board Chair Katrina Young is currently serving as the president of GSBA. “Our community is so fortunate to have such a high functioning Board of Education,” says Superintendent Dr. Terry Oatts. “These elected board members work hard to ensure every student has access to a multitude of opportunities and support services. This group deserves our recognition for going above and beyond to not only serve the needs of the students, families, faculty and staff, but for their commitment to innovative programs and practices.”  

Board members are elected to be the community’s voice on education and represent a continuous commitment to local citizen control and decision-making in education.

The men and women serving our school district and their years of service are:

Wales Barksdale            14 years (January 2005)
Pamela J. Brown              2 years (January 2017)
Tony Dowdy              6 years (January 2013)
Heather Duncan              2 years (January 2017)
Sandra Jackson-Lett          3 months (January 2019)     

As constitutional officers of Georgia, school board members are responsible for setting educational policies, employing school personnel, providing buildings and equipment, operating a transportation system and disbursing school funds. As community leaders, school board members serve as advocates for the children in local public schools and must study, evaluate and decide what actions are in the best interest of those students.

The Georgia School Boards Association sponsors the celebration.
