Heather Duncan made a motion that the meeting be called to order, and L'Toya Graham seconded the motion.

In attendance were Robert Culver, Ltoya Graham, Lori Donaldson, Heather Duncan, Rod Raphael, Tammy Hightower, and Steve McNutt.

We are projected to be about the same size next year.

We have added one additional TA in 3, 4, and 5 with Title I funds since the school year began.

Our math benchmark scores have increased in comparison to the RCPS average over last year.

Before- school tutoring focused on math basic facts and other math skills first semester.  The tutoring, headed by Wanda George and Anita Nelson, is used not only for remediation but also for enrichment for advanced students.  Students were placed in tutoring groups based on teacher recommendation.  Before-school tutoring resumes after winter break.

After-school tutoring is solely for remediation and is standards-based.

Positive behavior supports: Class tokens system from last year plus the new Mustang Corral, in which individual students can earn admission to a fun snack-and-chat session with their friends.

Rod Raphael said the writing lab has had a great positive impact on his son’s writing.

We’re doing a “math blast” tomorrow to focus on specific math skills for the entire day.

Rod Raphael said he’s seen two areas of improvement in recent years: Students have more groups to join and teachers on a grade level seem to be working in sync better.

Heather Duncan brought up a concern about our discipline program based on concerns voiced to her by other parents.  She wants to make sure we focus on positive discipline and on consistency.  She also asked whether we’re on track—teaching what needs to be covered by the time the next benchmark or other test comes.  Dr. Hightower said that yes, we’re on track.  Heather also raised a concern about weak social studies and science skills.  Dr. Hightower said that often these two subjects come down to reading and math skills because the textbooks are often written above grade levels.  She said one problem is that our instruction is driven by the CRCT, and the CRCT, although it soon will, doesn’t yet include science and math.

Dr. Hightower asked for input from the council on budget concerns—things we need to do to enhance our school.

Steve McNutt called for adjournment, and Robert Culver seconded the motion.
