Fifth graders may write a 100 word essay about why they would like to be on the FSE Mustang Morning News 15 news team.  They will then be allowed to audition, which involves reading a sample news story.  --Mr. McNutt

Running Club is open to students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.  Students in the Running Club run on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 7:00 – 7:20.  Participants arrive at school and come directly to the track.  Students run as many laps as they can.  After achieving 5, 10, 15, 20, etc., miles, each student has his/her picture taken and posted on the gym wall.  The Running Club is an opportunity for students to get the day off to a great start with exercise.  Much research links exercise to better learning, better grades, better behavior, and, of course, better health.  The Running Club starts around September and continues until morning temperatures are below 46 degrees.  The Running Club will then resume when warmer weather returns some time in April.  I hope to see your child out on the track running for good health.  --Coach Richardson
The purpose of the Math and Science Club is to provide an opportunity for 4th and 5th grade students to participate in a variety of engaging activities while applying basic math and science skills and principles. The club meets on the second and fourth Mondays, and there is a different emphasis each month. Many of the hands-on activities are based on the PBS Zoom Science program.  Past themes include: Chemistry: Mix It Up, Engineering: Design It, The Five Senses: Sense It, Patterns: Detect It, Forces & Energy: Move It, Life Science: Live It Up, and “Candy” Science. Upcoming meetings include a celebration of National Pi (3.14) Day on March 14th.  In April, activities will  address water treatment and Earth Day.  In addition, the Math and Science Club members are encouraging all students in grades 3-5 to join us in participating in the upcoming FSE Science and Social Studies Showcase Competition. All entries are due no later than Thursday, March 24th. The top six winners from Flat Shoals will have their work displayed at the county-level in May.  --Mrs. Hurst

The mission of the National Junior Beta Club is to promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, service, and leadership among elementary and secondary school students.  --Ms. T. English
